Believe in Magic

Prior to coming to Peru to work with a curandero (traditional healer) to cure my incurable autoimmune disease, I had no idea what a curandero, or shaman, really did.

Four years ago I was living in San Francisco and in the depths of my chronic illness. I was seeing a massage therapist, and she told me she also did shamanic work. This included shamanic soul retrieval sessions.

I didn’t know what this was, but I was intrigued and scheduled a session.

A soul retrieval involves the healer, or shaman, going into a trance, usually with drumming or meditation. They then travel to the spirit world, retrieving lost parts of a person’s soul.

If you find a skilled shaman, this healing can be incredibly profound.

My session was short but powerful, and the healer explained to me what she saw in the process. She said that after she retrieved the lost parts of my soul from the spirit world, a little girl appeared. When asked who she was, the girl said it was me, my younger self.

When these words were relayed to me, I was so surprised, I burst into tears.

A childhood memory shot through me. I vividly remembered that as a child, I used to talk to a tiny three-inch man that lived in the huge roots of a tree in my backyard.

I hadn’t thought of this in years!

I was a rather serious child, not prone to imaginary friends. My parents were slightly bemused by this little man, occasionally asking me if I saw him and how he was.
