4 Mindsets That Make You Powerful at Persistence

Persistence pays off

Are you a natural at everything you try? Me neither.

I used to get jealous of people who make things look easy. It felt unfair when people would progress faster despite working harder. But I stopped caring after I realised something:

You can overcome any setback, challenge, or disadvantage by making one decision about yourself.

You can always choose to be the most persistent.

There’s no better example of persistence than Thomas Edison.

Edison was the 7th child of a poor family. At school, his teacher believed he was ‘retarded’, and by age 12, he was working on the streets.

From an early age, he developed severe hearing problems. He didn’t have many opportunities, nor a formal education. But what he did have was the right attitude. As Robert Green explains in Mastery:

Despite disadvantages, he became the most prolific inventor of the 20th century, with 1093 patents. Hearing difficulties weren’t an obstacle but a motivator to create. No education wasn’t a setback but a reason to read relentlessly.

Edison famously said, “Your worth consists in what you are and not in what you have.”

What you are isn’t just about the present. It’s about who you can be in the future. You can decide to be the hardest working in the room. You can see failure as a reason to try harder. You can welcome effort with open arms.

With the right attitude, you can make persistence your superpower.
