Journalistic Integrity

Journalistic integrity is a term that is oftentimes minunderstood or forgotten lately. The journalism world has been often been maligned as being a “dying” industry, but this is simply not true. The field of journalism is not dying, but rather it is changing.

Gone are the days of journalists or newspapers being seen as gatekeepers of social justice, with them being replaced by the popular clickbait titles of headline-grabbing publications.

These attention-grabbing headlines are examples of the exact opposite of journalistic integrity. The sad thing about today’s society is that often times these sensationalistic headlines that exaggerate or stretch the truth of reality get far more attention than a publication that simply prints straightforward news. In the age of every publication moving towards online content, getting clicks is king. And nothing gets more clicks than a headline like “AL GORE SEX ATTACK”.

There are, however, some remaining traditional journalists that try to uphold the integrity of the field of news. The problem these journalists are facing, however, is that, frankly, the younger demographic — a demographic theyre going to have to market to eventually, whether they like it or not — just doesn't care about the hard-hittin news as kuch as they care about the fun, fluffy stuff.

It will be very interesting to see how the field of journalism reacts to these shifts in culture. As is true in all avenues of life, it all usually comes down to a simple choice: adapt or die.
