5 Myths About Alternative Energy

The debate over alternative energy can be confusing. Big words get thrown around, charts and graphs get put up all over the place, and political bias makes it difficult to know who is telling the truth.

Let’s talk about some of the things you might’ve heard.

1. Small-scale solar power is expensive

While the initial cost of installation may still be pretty high, an investment in solar can begin to turn a profit in about 15 years.

2. Alternative energy can’t replace coal and fossil fuels

Well it can’t yet, but it’s getting there.

We are still heavily dependent on non-renewable energy sources, and chances are we will be for a while.

3. You can’t depend on alternative energy

Critics like to say that since the sun isn’t always shining and the wind isn’t always blowing, alternative energy can’t solve our fossil fuel dependency. This line of thinking is completely misdirected.

Is it true that wind and solar don’t produce energy when there is no wind or sun? Yes, of course.

That doesn’t mean we can’t work around it.

Batteries have become an increasingly important part of the rise of renewable energy. A battery can help remedy the inconsistencies of alternative energy by functioning as a back up in case the panels aren’t pulling their weight.

4. Alternative energy is not economically viable

This is a blatant falsehood, yet it seems relatively common when discussing fossil fuels in relation to alternative energy.

At this point, there are less jobs in traditional fuel than in renewable energy. If trends are to be believed, the alternative energy industry is where the money will be in the future, maybe we should invest.

5. We don’t need renewable energy

Let’s make a point that nobody could argue with, regardless of politics.

Resources like fossil fuels will eventually run out, but the sun is not likely to stop shining any time soon, that’s why we call it a renewable resource.

Maybe ‘we’ don’t need renewable energy, but everyone who is going to be born here for the rest of time, does.

Regardless of whether you believe in climate change or not (a topic I will be covering in a different post), you can’t deny that we should be investing in alternative energies for the long term good and safety of our society.

Conclusion

There is a lot the average person doesn’t understand about renewable energy. I don’t pretend to know everything either, but I do know that we need to be investing in alternative energy.

Next time somebody leans heavily into the political arguments about alternative energy, bring facts into the debate.

Alternative energy is not perfect, especially not yet, but it is the best way to move forward in powering our planet.
