Celebrating a Crazy Good Builder

Doug Pisik at work in his workshop.

Most of our episodes feature organizations doing amazing work for others, but we also love celebrating individuals who give back in a big way.

In addition to being a leader for Habitat for Humanity, Doug is a wood artist. This is one of his creations.

Doug is an animal when it comes to volunteering for Habitat for Humanity. He has been the lead organizer on 22 Habitat builds in Atlanta, personally recruiting more than 1,200 volunteers, amassing 35,000 volunteer hours over a 20 year period.

Doug swung a hammer on all those builds and others in Memphis and New Orleans, solicited donations for construction materials and organized fundraisers to furnish the families’ homes.

Another piece of Doug’s artwork, titled “Passages.”

All of that earned Doug the distinction of being named one of Habitat Atlanta’s top 25 volunteers on its 25th anniversary in 2008. Here’s Doug on why he loves Habitat:

“The people they support demonstrate responsibility and the willingness to work for a better life…even if circumstances in their past didn’t make it feasible for them to own a home in a neighborhood where they could raise their families in a safe and nurturing environment.

I strongly believe the work [Habitat for Humanity] does can break a generational cycle families sometimes find themselves in where the children aren’t aware that they can have a better life.”
