Venting My Joys

You might say that the past two entries have been centered on my frustrations, so for this week I am writing about my joys.

Most mornings, I practice gratitude which centers on me listing items that bring me joy and for which I am grateful. This usually looks something like this: Parker, Sunshine, Flowers, Stars, Water-skiing, Running, Art, Music, Books, Teaching, Writing, Family, Friends…

Lately, I will have to say it’s been a tough few years, and I’m sure it’s been the same for most all of you. So here’s a challenge for all of you, have you ever tried venting your joys?

My Joy…

Thoughtful Gifts: Flowers just because, CD’s or cassettes, jewelry box, mailed letters and art…

Kind deeds: Rides home, Compliments, Smiles, Letters from students…

Good feedback: Some positive, truthful critiques in which improvement is possible and when you can tell your reviewer actually read your work…

Sit in’s: Regularly on my campus I have been participating in a sit in, which occurs everyday from 5–7 at the gates of my university. Every time I do, I feel lighter and usually have good discussions with new friends.

My dog: his ears, his smile, the way he stops to smell everything, the positions in which he sleeps, the way he’s changed over the years, his grey face, the way he’ll put his nose right under your hand to pop it up to get a pet, the way he used to run, and how determined he now is to walk…

Travel: Some of the best times in my life have been traveling with friends and getting to know new places and faces… the monuments in Greece, Sunflowers in Italy, Lavender in France, The music of South Africa, My cousin’s wedding in India, New Mexico lightning field, the Zuni Reservation, orange mesas and turquoise jewelry…

Water: the way the sun sparkles on the waves, the feel of cold lake water, laying on your back and looking up…

More specifically, I have been able to further my career through fellowships and conferences…TED Ed Fellows, Appalachian State Rosenbaum Symposium, Facing History and Ourselves in Memphis, The Olga Lengyl Institute for Holocaust and Human Rights studies in New York, NCTE, AMLE, ELATE,NCTEAR, GLAG and the World Food Prize’s Global Guides…

Movement: Running, Yoga, Biking, Walking, Driving, HIIT, Dancing, Boxing, Swimming…

Southern Summer Sounds: Cicadas, Crickets, Birds, Lightning Bugs, Rain showers on a metal roof…
