The Benefits of Social Media

I think that everywhere, especially in the church, the negative impacts of social media are broadcasted.

Focusing in particular on the church, it is often preached that social media is harmful. This is because social media often works as a highlight reel of ones life, which then creates false allusions of reality for the viewer.

This is often talked about, and it is often advocated that believers get rid of a good majority of social media. Another reason to delete your social media is to be able to better focus on your surroundings. This idea began a very popular movement within church communities, and other communities as well. The main idea being to put down your phone, and be in, and focus on the present.

However, I think it is unrealistic to expect people, teens especially, to just up and delete all of their social media. I think that if we are lucky, churches will explain the worst parts of social media, why they are so bad, and how to avoid those areas, without deleting it all together.

Regardless, the benefits of Social Media are rarely spoken about, and how to use these benefits to our advantage. I think this is an important topic to touch on as a “Media Prophet.”

Social media can be huge in being used to advance the kingdom. Churches may make it feel as though social media is a highlight reel and so you should delete it because it is an unrealistic point of comparison. However, what about making it realistic? What about using social media to share with other the work God is doing in your life, through your positive experiences and your negative ones. This can even work to progress our own faith as we look to see what God may be doing in our low moments.
