Top 5 Reasons Why Esports Is The Best Extracurricular Activity

There are a lot of options out there for students to do with their free time. Video games are one of such activities and for some, there may still be a stigma that gaming is for those who don’t go out or socialize. It can be hard to bridge the gap for what students want as well as teachers and parents in terms of extracurricular activities. We want to shift expand your mind and perspective and show you our top 5 reasons why Esports is one of the best extracurricular activities for students out there.

Unlike regular sports, injuries and things like that are a thing of the past! Not needing to engage in physical activity, aside from your thumbs, is deceptively convenient when considering that safety can be a legitimate concern for some. As an extracurricular activity, the venues where people play Esports at a lower level are typically held at either campuses or at local arcades. Campuses offer great ways of merging school with both fun and a good environment for students and aspiring players alike. They can be a great way to get to know your way around the local area and you’ll have staff and security there to ensure that everything is functioning accordingly. Arcades offer more than just Esports and can be great hangout spots to get together with friends and family to watch someone you know compete. Locals are one of the easiest ways for newcomers to get into the scene and offer similar amenities to campus in terms of security.

Let’s be real, some hobbies and activities can get real expensive real fast. Depending on the place you go to, you’ll at most have to bring your own controller and with proper care, it can last you years. Controllers themselves vary in terms of pricing but there are quality options out there for as low as $25. Video games and Esports offer an insane amount of entertainment given the initial investment. A $60 copy of Smash Ultimate can easily give you thousands of hours of entertainment off of one individual alone. Couple that with the fact that Esports are multiplayer games and you’ll be getting more than your fair share of entertainment while enjoying the experience with others. Even fees for being able to participate in low-level tournaments can be fairly affordable as well. Sometimes they’re even free! Next time you pick up that controller, just remember how long the entertainment will really last you.

Personally speaking, we’ve met some of our best friends through video gaming. Going to our locals and meeting others who have a similar mindset when it comes to Esports and video games is pretty cool. Being able to discuss characters you love within tournament settings and what you think makes a character broken or overpowered can make for great comedy. You’re also able to learn from each other too. Some of our best moments are when we ask the opponent “what can I do to improve?” It comes from a place of sincerity and it lets the other person know that you care about their thoughts as a person. You can look back on goofy moments throughout the match and bring your own brand of hype and humor to the game too with others. However you decide to enjoy Esports, just remember that you’re enjoying it with others.

Being able to say you are part of a culture within gaming is a pretty cool feeling. Nothing beats being able to tell someone you’ve competed against others in a competitive tournament setting. Having the crowd watch and cheer you on during a tense match can be a power trip to the senses. Being able to represent your favorite team during events at your local arcade or school can be fun too. Showing friends your favorite clip or a highlight video from the last major Esports event you’ve seen can make for a fun watch party as well. Esports culture even extends to something as simple as supporting Esports content creators as well. Even something as simple as sharing your favorite content creators with others goes a long way for both building and enjoying Esports culture. Whether it’s through Youtube, Twitch, or Twitter, there’s bound to be at least some form of media to appreciate Esports on.

Casually playing a game is a vastly different experience than playing it competitively and Esports are one of the best ways to do this. You’ll have the joy of working together with others while also honing your own skills on the side if you opt to go down the team game route. If you see yourself as more of a solo player then you’ll hit the dojo daily and check out guides and strats all while playing the game of choice. Esports offer something for those who value teamwork and for those who choose to focus on their own skills. Having the flexibility to tackle games in this manner is awesome as it makes this activity all the more inclusive. At the end of the day you really only need two things, a controller and the desire to experience your favorite game in a new light.

We’ve covered just a few reasons why we think Esports makes for a great extracurricular activity and we’d love to hear yours! Make sure to let us know your thoughts!
